A fully-immersive version of Minecraft for the Oculus Rift VR headset has somewhat surprisingly re-emerged as a possibility.
Markus Persson, the creator of the massively-popular, open world building game, scrapped a Rift specific iteration following Facebook’s purchase of Oculus, claiming he found the social network “creepy.”
However, in a Twitter post this weekend “Notch”
He tweeted: “And about now I’m officially over being upset about Facebook buying Oculus. I’m upset about there being a hole in my favorite sock instead.”
The tweet was immediately greeted by a response from Oculus CTO and games industry legend John Carmack, who offered to port the game to the Rift.
“Say the word, ship the source and I’ll make sure it runs well on you-know-what,” Carmack tweeted.
In response to a tweet send by another user asking whether Minecraft for Rift was back on the agenda, Persson coyly added: “That’s up to the Minecraft dev team.”
Upon the announcement of Facebook’s Oculus acquisition Notch was one of the most outspoken critics.
“I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook,” he said in a blog post.
“Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven’t historically been a stable platform. There’s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.
“And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.”
Now it appears the creator is working on building bridges with Oculus rather than building a fort around the Minecraft castle in order to protect it from the Facebook empire.
Minecraft for Oculus Rift before the end of the year anyone?
